SANS 10248 Compliance Guide
Understanding the South African National Standards for Healthcare Risk Waste Management.
MediGo Assurance: All waste collected via our platform is categorized, transported, and destroyed in strict accordance with SANS 10248:2012 and the NEM: Waste Act (2008).
Sharps Waste
Needles, scalpel blades, razors, ampoules, and broken glass.
Infectious / Anatomical
Swabs, bandages, human tissue, blood bags, and bodily fluids.
Pharmaceutical Waste
Expired medication, pills, syrups, and contaminated bottles.
Chemical Waste
Laboratory reagents, solvents, heavy metals, and disinfectants.
Generator Responsibilities
As per South African law, the "Generator" (Healthcare Facility) retains cradle-to-grave responsibility for their waste until strict disposal criteria are met. By using MediGo Waste, you automate the compliance trail, but you must ensure:
- 01Segregation at Source: Waste must be separated into the correct color-coded containers immediately.
- 02Safe Packaging: Sharps boxes must be sealed when 3/4 full. Liners must be knotted securely.
- 03Labeling: Every container must be identifiable. (Our Driver Tagging system assists with this).
- 04Storage: Waste must be stored in a secure, designated area away from public access.
